Barry founded OEM Diesel Products with a £40,000 director’s loan aged just 28, and has since dedicated his life to making the business a success.
Over the four years of its existence, OEM has grown from strength to strength, relocating into larger and more specialised facilities in Aberdeen and opening offices in Perth (Australia) and Dubai. With further expansion, the company has now grown into OEM Group, with OEM Engine Services, OEM Fuel Services and OEM Australia Pty operating as subsidiaries and has secured contracts with major players in the industry including Apache, EnQuest, Go Marine Group and the Australian Navy.
Despite the current Oil & Gas downturn, Barry has continued to drive success with OEM, taking calculated risks to develop and maximise opportunities to provide an extremely competitive offering. Investing in new offices in Perth and Dubai earlier this year were two such risks.
Barry’s continued success has led to him being crowned the 2015/16 Emerging Entrepreneur of the Year in the Aberdeen-based Elevator Awards. These competitive awards celebrate business excellence, entrepreneurial behaviour and outstanding community contributions by top businesses in the North East of Scotland.
Following these awards, OEM secured a major contract with energy services company Go Marine, worth up to £1 million, supplying engine support services to the company’s global fleet of vessels. Contracts like this are testament to Barry’s passion for developing extremely close working relationships with customers. Above all, he cites responsiveness and reliability as OEM’s unique selling points, responding to client queries within 24 hours and offering a near on-demand service which is noted by his clients.
Through the growth and strategic vision, Barry has now developed OEM Group Scotland Ltd. The Group currently consists of OEM Engine Services, OEM Fuel Services and OEM Australia Pty with a fourth being unveiled in the next few months. This new business structure allows Barry to start the next phase of planning and implementing a new management focus to assist in the growth of the Group within a diverse market.
Through the development of new products, along with the expansion of the Group with the opening of the new office in Australia and UAE, Barry aims to grow OEM by 65% in the next 12 months and a further 25% year on year thereafter. He is aiming to grow OEM internationally along with expanding further across Australia and the Middle East, while continuing to grow at a sustainable but aggressive rate without compromising the high level of service that is so highly valued by clients.
