Accenture Digital Skills Launches to Help Address UK Skills Gap

Accenture Digital Skills, a programme of free online courses designed to help tackle the digital skills gap, is to be rolled out across Scotland and the UK, following a successful pilot with Young Enterprise Scotland (YES).

The partnership between Accenture and YES will also see the seven digital training courses, hosted on FutureLearn, promoted to schools and colleges, Education Scotland and the College Development Network Scotland.

The courses have been designed to provide young people, entrepreneurs, people returning to work and those looking to re-skill with the digital knowledge and skills required to thrive in the digital economy.

Glasgow Jewellery designer, Claire Halligan (22), was one of the first to benefit from the programme. She knew she had to get digitally-savvy and completed the Accenture Digital Marketing course. Having finished college she was glad to be able to go to the platform and have another way of learning.

Now creating jewellery for her own business, Pop Up Jewellery, Claire said:

“Using digital technologies as a catalyst for my business was huge for me.

“Personally I think technology and social media is a language in itself.  So my biggest challenge and on-going target is working on my social media.  At first I didn’t know how to write an eye-catching post or use my social media to show my journey although now I have started writing a blog and have got better at writing posts on Facebook.”

Brian McEwan, Programme Manager at YES added:

“The Accenture Digital Skills Programme has been a fantastic addition to the tools Young Enterprise Scotland use to engage with students and young people. The courses give them a feel for innovative online learning through the FutureLearn MOOC, on subjects they can relate to, that are relevant, interesting and useful for when they start their careers. Audio and visual contributions by digital experts within each module add considerable value to the learning experience, and having a point of contact from YES Programme Executives both on and off line creates follow up opportunities, including support in obtaining the industry recognised Digital Skills Badges.”

YES and Accenture will showcase the Accenture Digital Skills programme at this year’s Festival of Youth Enterprise, taking place at Hampden in June.
