The co-hosts of this year’s European Championships have teamed up once again – this time to create better links between businesses and promote international trade.
Four Glasgow businesses, currently not exporting out of the UK, were part of a trip to Germany that connected each of the Scottish companies to various German based organisations and businesses.
A partnership between Scottish Development International (SDI), Glasgow Chamber of Commerce and Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce, the initiative included training on exporting and doing business in Germany, a trip to Berlin, Nuremberg and Munich with several networking events, presentations and visits, and one to one advice on how to get started.
Glasgow based LINIAN Supply Co, Wind Farm Analytics, Gold Hart and Freedom Scripted Entertainment were among the 12 Scottish companies that took part in the trip.
Germany is the largest economy in Europe and the fourth largest export market for Scotland, accounting for exports worth £1.9 billion in 2016.
A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Glasgow Chamber of Commerce and Berlin Chamber of Commerce in April this year, designed to give members mutual access to Scotland and Germany’s largest cities, with the aim of maximising business opportunities.
Richard Muir, Deputy Chief Executive at Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, said: “We have been growing ties with various German organisations for several years, and our signing of the MOU with Berlin Chamber in April has strengthened that relationship.
“The recent visit with SDI and Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce gave each of the businesses the opportunity to map out areas of growth within the market, and discover routes on how they might achieve this.
“As Glasgow and Berlin prepare to co-host the European Championships 2018, it’s fantastic to see our business communities connect to secure and grow further links between both cities.”
Lynne Jhangeer, Sales and Export Director at LINIAN Supply Co, said: “It was an absolute pleasure to be supported by both the Glasgow and Edinburgh Chambers of Commerce along with SDI.
“As a business we had done a lot of research and networking beforehand so it was great to take advantage of the amazing network that the organisations were able to provide and that we were able to tap into.”
