Scottish distillery designer expands down under

A Scottish distillery designer has ramped up its international presence with a contract to create the largest malt whisky distillery in Australia.

Stirling based Allen Associates started work on Archie Rose Distilling Company’s new Botany facility this summer, with a completion date set for mid 2019.  The distillery, which will be the second Archie Rose facility in Sydney, will produce single malt whisky, rye malt whisky and gin.

In addition to the Archie Rose project, Allen Associates has also added to its international footprint with a recent contract win to provide design services to a bourbon distillery expansion in New York State, USA.

The Australian contract marks a major milestone for Scotland’s largest distilled spirits chemical and process engineering consultancy and has led to Allen Associates opening a dedicated office in Sydney.  Led by company Director, Gregor Warren, the office will act as a base for Allen Associates continued expansion in Australia and East Asia.

Gregor said: “Archie Rose is a major player in the international distilled spirits sector so when we were invited to present a feasibility study last year we grasped the opportunity.  The Botany facility will be unlike any other distillery in Australia and we are delighted to be involved in the project.

“The distillery will be custom built to accommodate Archie Rose’s production processes – including its six-malt single malt mash bill, extensive use of specially roasted malts, malted rye and individually distilled gin botanicals.  We will also look to incorporate a number of energy efficient brewing and distilling features into the build.”

Archie Rose Founder, Will Edwards, said: “This new site is a massive step for us. The Botany expansion not only allows us to tailor our plant, equipment and processes to suit our unique production methods, but also gives us the opportunity to consider end-to-end site sustainability, with the aim being to use less water, power and gas, and capture and reuse as much energy as possible throughout the distilling process.”

The new contracts come on the back of a successful year for Allen Associates, which has seen the company win a raft of new business at home and overseas helping it to increase turnover by 50% to £1.9 million.

Allen Associates now has a presence in 17 countries with international projects accounting for 20% of turnover – an increase of ten per cent on the same period last year.   The Stirling consultancy has also recruited an additional two Chemical Engineers, boosting the consultancy’s headcount to 17.

Allen Associates Managing Director, Scott Allen, said: “Over the past few years we have looked to increase our international footprint and this has led to a significant number of new contracts.   In Australia we are also helping the Melbourne based STARWARD Distillery to increase production, while the bourbon distillery expansion in New York State gives us an additional foothold in the USA.

“Although the UK continues to be our principal market, there is no doubt our reputation is spreading rapidly across a number of international markets and we see this continuing to grow over the coming years as distilled spirits sales continue to increase worldwide.”
